Scientific research shows that trauma and substance use are deeply linked. People who have experienced trauma are much more likely to use drugs or alcohol than people who have not. This is especially true if the person develops symptoms of PTSD after the trauma. However, with the help of protective factors, trauma might not lead to drug use in some cases.
