Thank you for sharing Montana’s methodology for sickle cell screening.
I live in New York and I would like to share some information about newborn screening in this state.
In New York, The Newborn Screening Program (NBSP)is mandated by law, and parental permission is not required.2 The only two circumstances where newborn screening will not be performed is if the parent or guardian of the infant is a member of a recognized religious organization whose teachings are contrary to the testing requirement, and they have declined the testing of their child. The second reason is if the newborn is receiving compassionate (comfort) care only and is not expected to survive and the parent or guardian has declined the screening.1,2 The NBSP in New York screens for more than 50 disorders, including sickle cell disease (S/S and S/C) and other hemoglobinopathies, which, without treatment, may permanently impact newborns’ health and overall quality of life.1 The specimen collected will be sent and processed by the NYS Department of Health / Wadsworth Center. The method used to screen for sickle cell disease is high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results are released to the healthcare provider within 7 days.1,2
