Please write a 4–6-page reflection paper on your volunteer experience (4-6 pages does not include title page or
references). The paper is to follow APA guidelines (typed, double-spaced, title page, references page, page numbers), include the following headings (Identifying Information, SW321 Skills Used During Service Learning, Personal Reflection, Improving Services Provided, Learned About Self) and include the following:
1. Identifying Information: Identifying information about the agency and clients you worked with (location,type of clients, type of neighborhood (urban/rural, lower or higher SES, diverse, business/corporate area,etc.), services offered, mission of the organization, etc. (1/2 page)
2. SW321 Skills Used During Service Learning: Detailed descriiptions of activities you did with clients during the semester highlighting how you used your SW 321 skills. This is your final paper and meant to show you used your SW 321 skills in your experience; whether it was with clients or other volunteers or staff members: open/closed ended question, active listening, recognizing biases, ethical dilemma navigation, confrontation, assessment, awareness of NASW Code of Ethics, empathy, exploring and focusing skills, strengths based approach, motivational interviewing interventions, awareness of systems, resource connection, advocacy, enhancing family functioning, interpretation, termination; etc.. A strong A-paper will
highlight multiple techniques learned from across the entirety of the course.
3. Personal Reflection: A personal reflection on what you learned about attentive listening, communication, and relationship building, including, identifying your strengths in communication and areas for work.
4. Improving Services Provided: Your analysis of how to improve the services that are provided at the agency (including why it’s important, how the changes could be implemented, and the desired impact of the change – critical thinking is necessary here – there’s always ways to improve services – if you are unsure, ask the person who supervised you about things they think could improve services. Please do not say ‘everything is great; no suggested changes) as this will get you 0 points. (1/2 page)
5. Learned About Self: And what you learned about yourself. Did you find this volunteering assignment easy; did you find yourself feeling awkward trying to incorporate and practice specific SW321 skills; did you surprise yourself in any way; etc. (1/2 page)
Remember: this assignment is to give you an opportunity to put your SW 321 skills into practice. Be sure during your experience you are consciously being aware of using your SW 321 skills so you can include specific examples in your
paper. For example, open-/close-ended questions, scaling questions, miracle questions, assessment of systems, confidentiality, NASW Code of Ethics, paraphrasing, summarizing, seeking clarification, resource linkages, etc. A strong
‘A’ paper will be able to specifically tie in how they used a wide variety of SW 321 skills, both in the volunteering work and in the assessment of the overall experience. Sections 2 and 3 should make up the bulk of the paper and are
the most heavily weighted sections.
